28 Ways to Reward Your Employees Without a Raise

Posted by Rick Lau on Aug 28, 2019 11:17:38 AM

Managing employees and keeping them engaged is more difficult now than it ever has been. In the past, employers used financial rewards like performance based raises or bonuses as motivators. Now, however, employees, especially millennials want more. They value recognition and being part of something.

Many clinic owners struggle when hiring millennials because they don’t understand this one essential, key fact . According to the 2019 Deloitte Millennial Survey, 49% would quit their current job in the next two years if they had a choice. That’s frustrating considering how much time and effort goes in to recruiting staff.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you the best 28 reward strategies I have learned from my work with hundreds of clinic owners. These strategies can go a long way towards rewarding staff and achieving their best efforts at the clinic, regardless of role.

How I Use High Five Fridays to Celebrate Small Wins and Keep Staff Engaged

Posted by Rick Lau on Sep 7, 2016 11:00:00 AM

If you’re like most clinic owners, you treat a lot of patients and don’t have much time to grow or manage your business. It’s hard to juggle the two, let alone make sure your employees and contractors are engaged and committed to their roles.

Sometimes, it can seem like a struggle to get a bigger commitment from them. You really want your staff to work for you like clinic owners who care about the business. But, for some reason it doesn’t seem to work out that way.

The secret to having a highly engaged team and a winning business is not as difficult as you think. In fact, it’s actually pretty easy.

What you need to do is: Build a culture that everybody loves!

Culture is the one core element that will make all the difference. And from there you take the time to celebrate small wins, keep track of your score so you know you're winning, and you hire the right people.

In this post I will share:

  • How paying attention can inspire action
  • A super easy technique to engage staff right now
  • The one key thing you need to do right now that will make all the difference
  • A quiz to test your team's engagement

Take the Quiz: How Engaged Are Your Clinicians and Employees?

Posted by Rick Lau on May 10, 2016 5:00:00 PM

You just attended an awesome physiotherapy marketing workshop and now you want to implement all this cool new stuff at your clinic. You also want to start selling retail products to your clients (such as tens machines) so your clinic can offer a complete solution to patients.

After the workshop you plan a team meeting to share your goals and visions but, nobody seems as excited as you. There seems like an air of resistance and lack of commitment. Still, you want to move ahead so set a plan for people to implement, which includes selling more retail products to patients at their visits.

Weeks go by and nothing gets done, nothing changes. Despite your big team meeting and action plan, everyone seems to go back to their usual routine, forgetting about the ultimate plan altogether!

The challenge clinic owners have is:

When your culture sucks and your staff are not engaged, nobody will want to do anything!

Let’s talk about what healthcare management really is, why culture is your first focus toward a successful business, and what makes your clinicians and employees engaged. At the end I’ve also put together a quiz so you can test how much engagement you currently have - if there’s a gap, then you will know what to fix!

Employee Retention: Why We Stopped Having Farewell Parties

Posted by Rick Lau on Dec 2, 2015 11:25:17 AM

As a business owner it’s a real disappointment when one of your best team members leave to move onto another job.

Having to replace their position is enough of a stress as it is. But on top of that you’re expected to have a farewell party to celebrate their new journey.

I’ve found that as a business owner, it’s sort of an awkward position to be left in. I mean, do I turn up and pay for it?

I used to do this, feeling like it was my obligation in a way. But I never liked these parties. It’s because you feel disappointed. Sure, you’re happy for the person and they did amazing work for you. But you’ve spent years and years of time to train them and now they are running off to your competitors.

And often times, they boast to your staff about how much more money they are making. It’s just not a great situation to be in.

So in this post I’m going to share

  • the true costs of employee turnover
  • what really inspires employees to be productive and committed
  • how we mixed things up at CSC to produce better culture and outcomes
  • 7 powerful tips to creating a culture that people love so they’ll never want to leave.

Discover the Secret to Inspiring Employees for Rapid Growth

Posted by Rick Lau on Aug 19, 2015 10:08:00 AM

If you could take your health business from zero sales to millions in revenue would that be of interest to you?

Companies like Zappos have done it, and its all been driven primarily by repeat customers and word of mouth.

Did you get that?

This strategy doesn’t cost money…but the changes it can bring can be a true game changer.

You see, one of the reasons physiotherapy clinics, chiropractic clinics, and massage therapy clinics fail to grow is their lack of core values. When it comes to business growth, we’re told to focus on getting new patients, getting more doctor referrals, and selling products. But we’re not told about the importance of core values as a strategy to inspire employees and patients alike.

This is where companies like Zappos unlocked the door to a flow of continued business growth. Today I wanted to explore core values, what they are, why they are so important, and we’ll also look at some examples from Nurse Next Door and Whole Foods.
